David Rowland
b.1924-2010, USA

BIOGRAPHY

David Rowland was a quintessential American industrial designer who favoured simplicity and practicality in his design language; informed largely by rapidly changing urban environments of the USA, in which scaling cities meant reduced domestic spaces.

This consideration lead to the 40/4 chair’s inception; which was not without difficulty in patenting and producing. Initially licenced by Knoll for a mere six months, it would eventually be taken on by Howe; where it remains to this day as a steadfast heritage collection.
