Philippe Starck
b.1949, France

BIOGRAPHY

French designer Philippe Starck has garnered an inimitable career worldwide; beginning with the Parisian night club scene in the 1970s. Known for employing a subversive attitude in his work, Starck pioneered transparent materials as wholly relevant for furniture design, while simultaneously re-imagining the relationship by combining unusual materials such as polyurethane, wood and steel for the context of aesthetics. This duality in his work is underpinned by the relentless conceptualization of function as the fundamental building block for any of his designs. Philippe Stark is one of those unique designers who both defines, yet transcends, trends in his decades long career - synthesizing intellectualism and humour, ever aware of his own limitations as conveyor of material form.
